URMC’s Neurology/Neurosurgery and Urology Programs Among Nation’s Best

Jul. 16, 2012

U.S. News & World Report has released its 2012 rankings of the Best Hospitals in America, and the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) has two adult programs on the list.  Only 150 of the nation’s 5,000 hospitals rank in at least one specialty in the magazine’s 23rd annual Best Hospitals issue.

For the second year in a row, URMC’s Neurology/Neurosurgery program has made the top 50 list; this year at #46. Also ranking for the second consecutive year, Urology earned a slot, this time at #48. In addition, nine other URMC adult specialties are recognized as “high performing,” meaning that their scores are nearly as high as the top 50. Those include cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, orthopaedics, and pulmonology. With its mix of nationally ranked and high performing programs, URMC/Strong Memorial Hospital is ranked as #1 overall in the Rochester metropolitan area.

These rankings add to the growing list of pediatric programs that have earned U.S. News best scores which were released last month.  Each of the past four years, Golisano Children's Hospital has added another specialty to the listings, starting in 2009 with orthopaedics, which ranked #38 this year. Neonatology ranked #27; Gastroenterology, which is new to the list this year, ranked #41, and Neurology/Neurosurgery ranked #44.

Each year, U.S. News uses a combination of statistical and reputational measures including survival rates, patient safety scores, volume and reputation, to select the top 50 hospitals in each of 16 medical specialties.
