Basketball fans will gather in Nazareth College’s Kidera Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 17 for the 1 p.m. kick-off of the two-day, 2nd annual Onnie’s Classic Women’s Basketball Event. Four women’s college teams, including The College at Brockport, Vassar College, Keuka College, and Nazareth’s own Golden Flyers will each compete in two games to raise money for Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Elizabeth McAnarney, M.D., will serve as the event’s honorary chair. She is the former pediatrician-in-chief of Golisano Children’s Hospital and chair emerita of URMC’s Department of Pediatrics. McAnarney is also a graduate of Vassar College and a member of the Board of Trustees at Nazareth College.
Onnie’s Classic, a tournament unique to the Rochester area, was created by Tony Wells in honor of his mother, Onnie. Proceeds from the weekend sporting event will be given to the “Onnie Wells Child Life Fund” in support of the “Onnie Wells Child Life Activity Room,” located in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Established by the children’s hospital in 2009, the fund aims to provide patients in the activity room with engaging and educational materials.
This year’s Onnie’s Classic is in honor of Jamie White and Kelsey Fahy, who both spent time in the children’s hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The girls will act as “honorary captains” of the event, handing out Certificate of Appreciation plaques to captains of each team over the course of the first day. Saturday will be Jamie’s eighth birthday.
Vassar College will play The College at Brockport at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by a 3 p.m. game between Keuka College and Nazareth. The following day will start with a 1 p.m. game between Vassar and Nazareth. Keuka will then play Brockport at 3 p.m.
Admission is $5 for both games each day. Current Nazareth students will be admitted for $1 with a student ID.
