Sept. 28th Tea Benefits Breast Cancer Program at Wilmot Cancer Center

Event celebrates the life of long-time Strong Hospital nurse

Wednesday, September 10, 2003

Theresa Hwa, a nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital for 14 years, loved nice clothes and a bargain. Before her death from breast cancer last year, she found both at Lu’s Back Door, a consignment shop in Fairport, where she made many friends on her weekly visits.

On Sunday, Sept. 28, Lu’s Back Door will hold a tea in her memory to help other women who are facing breast cancer at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center.  Theresa’s Tea at Lu’s Back Door will be held from noon to 5 p.m.  This special fund-raiser will celebrate the life of Mrs. Hwa, who succumbed to breast cancer on Dec. 18, 2002.

“So many people knew and loved Theresa and were amazed by her vibrant nature despite the disease.  We want to celebrate her life and remember the many gifts that she gave to each of us,” says Teresa Richards, of Lu’s Back Door.  “We are anxious to help support the breast cancer program at the Wilmot Cancer Center.”

Participants can check out fall and winter clothing at Lu’s, located at 19 Jefferson Ave., in Fairport, bid on items in a silent auction, get a chair massage, and sample hors d’oeuvres throughout the afternoon.

Mrs. Hwa worked in many departments at Strong Memorial Hospital, including radiology and occupational health/environmental medicine, and touched many people over the years.

The cost is $25.  For reservations, call Lu’s at (585) 377-4008, or Jamala Ridley at the Wilmot Cancer Center, (585) 275-6292.
