Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester Medical Center has earned recognition from the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) and the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as an AAGL Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG)TM. In addition, four URMC faculty members were named as COEMIG designees.
COEMIG designation requires an extensive review of a hospital’s surgical facilities, operations and procedures as well as its staff’s education, training and continuous quality improvement efforts. Physicians who earn COEMIG designation must meet stringent criteria based on their individual expertise and experience.
URMC faculty members named as COMIG designees are Bala Bhagavath, M.D., Gunhilde Buchsbaum, M.D., Amy Benjamin-Pratt, M.D., and Stephan Sanko, M.D.
COEMIG “recognizes surgeons and facilities that demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care. The program is structured to help minimally invasive gynecologic surgery providers continuously improve care quality and patient safety,” according to AAGL.
“It is a recognition of our commitment to continuous quality care and our emphasis on patient safety,” said Bhagavath, who also serves as URMC’s director of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and co-director of the URMC Fibroid Center. “Earning this designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest quality care to our patients who need this specialized care. The COEMIG program fosters quality improvement and participation has focused our team on exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines. But, most importantly, our commitment to excellence improves the health and well-being of our patients.”
Strong Memorial offers a wide range of minimally invasive gynecological procedures, including endometrial surgeries, treatment for uterine fibroids, hysterectomies, pelvic floor and incontinence surgeries, and fertility treatments.
