Free Mammograms Offered Feb. 13 in Henrietta

Friday, January 29, 2016

UR Medicine Breast Imaging at Red Creek and Cancer Services Program of Monroe County have partnered to offer free screening mammograms on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 8 a.m. to noon for  women age 40 and older who do not have insurance or who have a high deductible plan and need assistance. Appointments, which can be scheduled by calling (585) 487-3304, are required.

Guidelines released by several organizations in recent months may be confusing for women as to when they should start getting a mammogram. Many risk factors can help a woman determine what’s best for her based on guidance from her primary care physician. For women with an average risk of breast cancer, UR Medicine Breast Imaging recommends receiving annual screening starting at age 40.

“Over the last 20 to 30 years, mortality rates from breast cancer have decreased by at least 30 percent. This is due in large part to mammography finding breast cancer in earlier stages,” said Avice O’Connell, M.D., F.A.C.R., Professor of Imaging Sciences and Director of Women’s Imaging at UR Medicine and Professor. “Experts in mammography know that regular screening for those over the age of 40 is the best way to reduce deaths from breast cancer.”

Free transportation is offered for those who need it, and free parking is available near the facility located at 500 Red Creek Drive, Suite 130. Volunteers from the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester will provide refreshments and other assistance during the event.

While the free screening mammograms are available primarily for women over 40, women age 35 to 39 may get a free mammogram if it is their first one or if their doctor has recommended it.  Also, women who cannot make the Feb. 13 screening date can set up an appointment for a different day or time. Questions regarding eligibility or arranging an appointment for another day can be directed to the Cancer Services Program of Monroe County at (585) 224-3070.
