Wednesday, April 28, 2004
More than 800 people gathered April 24th for the fifth annual Discovery Ball and raised more than $460,000 to support local cancer care and research at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Leaders honored Judy von Bucher with the Inspiration Award for her ability to provide hope and encouragement to people with cancer and survivors.
Von Bucher was selected for the honor because of her positive attitude and determination to beat Hodgkin’s disease while raising three preschoolers. Following successful treatment, she got involved with the Wilmot Cancer Center and was a founding member of the Wilmot Cancer Center Board, working to raise awareness of the quality care and cutting-edge research underway at the center.
This year’s event, chaired by Bill and Beth Anne Napier of Pittsford, and key corporate sponsors included: Xerox Corp., Bausch & Lomb, Constellation Brands, The Pike Co., Wegmans Food Markets, Wilmorite Inc., and The Farash Corp.
Many of the attendees purchased the coveted Discovery Bags, filled with gift certificates and items donated by dozens of community businesses, and donated funds to support the purchase of needed equipment and items for patient care and research at the Wilmot Cancer Center.
The Discovery Ball was created in 1999 as a way to support local cancer research. To date, this gala event has raised nearly $2 million.
