Couples expecting the birth of twins or triplets can take part in a new childbirth class designed especially for them starting this fall at Strong Memorial Hospital’s Strong Beginnings. Three one-day sessions of “Marvelous Multiples” are scheduled for Saturdays in October, January and March.
The idea to offer classes exclusively for multiple births was proposed by members of the Greater Rochester Mothers of Twins Club that provided funds for the hospital to purchase the special curriculum. Among the class topics are:
- facts about multiple births,
- prenatal nutrition, discomforts of pregnancy, rest and limitations,
- discussion of the emotional aspects of multiple pregnancy,
- specifics of the labor and delivery process with multiples,
- information and resources for coping with pregnancy and life at home with multiples.
“Expecting twins or triplets is exciting but can also be worrisome,” says Childbirth Education Coordinator Chris Arnold, R.N. “This new class will provide support and assistance so couples can gain more knowledge about their pregnancy, what the birth will be like, and what to expect of life with two or three new babies. Our goal is that they’ll feel informed, better able to communicate with their health care providers, and ultimately more confident in meeting the challenges ahead of them.”
Participants can register for any one of three sessions, scheduled for October 23, 2004, January 8, 2005, and March 5, 2005. Ideally, the expectant woman and her support person should attend some time between the 15th and 25th weeks of pregnancy.
