When Michelle Shayne, M.D., recently joined the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, it was a homecoming. Shayne studied opera at University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music and then at the Juilliard School, before making a career transition to medicine.
Shayne performed as a soloist on the stages of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Town Hall in New York City, as well as the Aspen Music Festival, Tanglewood Music Festival, Bellas Artes in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and The Hall of Columns in Moscow. She also sang with notable artists such as Kathleen Battle, Andre Previn and Wynton Marsalis.
However, her interest in the sciences prevailed and she decided to go to medical school and studied at the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry.
She graduated from medical school in 1998 and completed her residency at Strong Memorial Hospital. Most recently, she completed a Fellowship in hematology/oncology at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Shayne is the newest member of the Wilmot Cancer Center’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program. In addition to her clinical activities, she’ll research cancer in the elderly and hormonal treatments for breast cancer.
Shayne joins Jennifer J. Griggs, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P., Gretchen Ahrendt, M.D., co-directors of the program, Gary H. Lyman, M.D., M.P.H., Marilyn Ling, M.D., Linda Schiffhauer, M.D., James Peacock, M.D., and Carl Andrus, M.D.
“Dr. Shayne is a great addition to our dynamic breast cancer team. Our patients benefit from her expertise,” says Richard I. Fisher, M.D., director of the Wilmot Cancer Center.
The Brooklyn native is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She is a journal reviewer for Stem Cells and American Journal of Hematology.
She and her husband, Edward Sassaman, M.D., have five children and live in Pittsford.
