Wine Auction Offers Rare Chance to Sample the Worlds Finest Wines

Rare Vintage Auction Benefits Kessler Family Burn/Trauma ICU

Friday, November 12, 2004

On November 13, Rochester residents will have the opportunity to sample from among 200 wines—many of them rare and expensive vintages not typically served at such events—at the "Toast to Your Health" wine tasting and auction fund-raiser. To be held Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, funds will benefit the new Kessler Family Burn/Trauma Intensive Care Unit scheduled to open in the beginning of December at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The black-tie optional event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a tasting featuring more than 200 vintages, many of them premium wines such as Quintessa, Antinori, Fisher, Louis Jadot, and Louis Latour.  Due to the overwhelming popularity of this event, tasting hours have been extended to 9:30 p.m. to give enough time to sample the wide variety of wines. At 7:30 p.m., a five-course gourmet dinner specially prepared by Riverside’s executive chef John Eschler will be served, paired with premium wine to compliment each portion of the meal.

Throughout dinner, Greg Quiroga, a wine auctioneer from the heart of the California wine country, will auction 50 lots of some of the world’s most sought-after vintages, including Bryant Family and Pahlmeyer. One of the highlights of the evening is the opportunity to bid on a wine buying trip to Burgundy, France. Organized by Sherwood Deutsch and Michael Misch of Century Liquor, the trip is a whirlwind tour of some of the world’s most renowned wine estates including Louis Jadot and Domaine of Romanee-Conti. It includes tours of wine cellars not open to the public, and private samplings with lunches with vintners Aubert De Villaine and Roland Remoissenet.  Bidding on this once-in-a-lifetime trip begins at $10,000!

Rochester wine lovers will also be able to bid on a Bordeaux sampling event to experience what industry experts have called "the greatest vintage in history."  Winners will taste five of the "First Growth" Chateau wines from the exceptional 2000 Bordeaux vintage including Ch. Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Haut Brion, Latour, and Margaux. Many of these bottles are selling for $400 - $700 per bottle today. Dinner will be prepared by Chef Tony Gullace of Max of Eastman Place.  This auction item will be pre-sold at $1,000, and seating is limited.

Tickets are available for both the wine tasting only ($60 per person) or for the entire evening, including the five course gourmet meal and auction ($195 per person).  For reservations and additional information, call 275-9827 or visit

Strong Memorial is currently finalizing details for the new $10 million Kessler Family Burn/Trauma ICU.  Funds are still needed to support the significant expansion of the region’s only trauma center, which is slated to open on Dec. 2. The new unit will greatly increase Strong’s ability to care for critically ill patients suffering from acute trauma or burns, and will include a family waiting room, centralized nursing stations, step-down patient rooms, and the newest equipment and technology.
