Inaugural 'Roland's Ride' to Benefit Golisano Children's Hospital

Monday, August 12, 2002

The first Roland's Ride, a motorcycle dice run to benefit pediatric cancer research efforts at Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong, will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, in North Chili.

The event is named for former policeman Roland Marchetti, who, at 64, died in 2001 after a short battle with cancer. Marchetti was past president of the Monroe County chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE). Registration for the dice run is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Jake's, 4390 Buffalo Road, North Chili.

The registration fee is $10 and an additional $5 for each passenger. During a dice run, motorcyclists make several stops, rolling dice at each one. Their "hand" is recorded and compared to everyone else's at the finish. Live bands and dinner will be supplied at the last stop, the Buffalo Roadhouse, 3873 Buffalo Road. There, participants who have the highest dice hand will receive prizes, and door prizes will be randomly distributed.

It is in the midst of its first comprehensive fund-raising campaign, a $30-million effort that will allow the hospital to improve its services. The hospital's top priority is building a state-of-the-art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
