Summer Camp Targets Performance and Strength

This camp offers athletes the opportunity to properly condition their bodies to avoid injury and to help them hit the ground running and achieve optimal performance when school begins.
Rochester area athletes have the opportunity to get a leg up on the competition this summer not by attending a sport-specific camp, but rather, a strength and conditioning camp designed to help high school athletes increase strength, power and flexibility regardless of their particular sports concentration.
According to Michael Maloney, M.D., director of University Sports Medicine, as participation in junior and high school athletics becomes more competitive and the level of play more sophisticated, young athletes are expected to practice more often and play at higher levels.
“To be successful at varsity level sports, athletes need to properly condition their bodies so they are achieving maximum power and hopefully prevent common injuries,” Maloney said. “This camp offers athletes the opportunity to properly condition their bodies to avoid injury and to help them hit the ground running and achieve optimal performance when school begins.”
University Sports Medicine athletic trainers, physical therapists and sports medicine strength and conditioning specialists met during the winter to review scientific literature to determine those exercises and strengthening movements research has shown to increase power, flexibility and reduce injuries. The result was the creation of an eight-week sports conditioning camp to increase athlete’s strength and flexibility, quickness and foot speed, and balance. Trainers also will coach athletes in correct biomechanics for basic movements. In addition, the camp will include components of the ACL injury prevention program, along with other injury prevention techniques.
Two eight-week camp sessions, one for males and the other for females, will run from June 20 through August 11. Athletes must be between 14-18 to participate in the camps. Each week, sessions will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the University of Rochester. Cost is $150 per person.
