Department store raises $25,000 for telemedicine program

The telemedicine program, based at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong, has more than halved sick-leave absences among children and helped parents avoid taking significant amounts of time-off to care for their sick children. The success of the program in helping families balance work and family life while keeping their kids healthy and safe is why Kohl’s Department Stores chose Health-e-Access to receive its $25,000 donation through the national Kohl’s Cares for Kids program.

Health-e-Access uses the Internet to connect sick children with pediatricians. The program will be demonstrated from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fairport Music & Food Festival on Aug. 27.

Parents of children at Northside Elementary in Fairport, East Rochester Elementary, Miss Rita’s Small World in Penfield and Bates-Rich Beginnings day care centers in Brighton, Pittsford and Fairport can also register their children in the program from 2 to 4 p.m. during the festival. Parents of children at other telemedicine sites may also register their children. In order to participate in the program, parents must register their children.

At 3 p.m., Kohl’s will present its donation to Heath-e-Access’s Kenneth McConnochie, M.D., a pediatrician and founder of the program, and representatives from new telemedicine sites.

“We are so fortunate to have friends like Kohl’s,” McConnochie says. “Heath-e-Access has been an incredible benefit to hundreds of children and parents around Rochester, and this donation will help us improve and expand the program.”

Health-e-Access is just beginning a year-long rollout, expanding from service to seven city child care centers to 22 sites.  New sites will include suburban child care centers, and city and suburban elementary schools in the Rochester area. This expansion, which will add an estimated 8,500 to the Health-e-Access network, establishes a way for children to regularly visit their own doctor for very common childhood illnesses, without the child, doctor, or parent leaving their location.

Kohl’s commitment to Golisano Children’s Hospital is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program, which raises funds for children’s hospitals through the sale of seasonal gift items. Net profits from the sales go to children’s hospitals in the market areas served by Kohl’s.  Kohl’s community outreach also includes Kohl’s Kids Who Care, an annual youth volunteer recognition program, fundraising gift cards for local schools and non-profit youth groups, as well as an associate program to encourage volunteerism.
