Christopher’s Challenge Walk-a-Thon Set for Nov. 6

Friday, October 21, 2005

The fifth annual Christopher’s Challenge walk-a-thon to raise awareness of the need for bone marrow and stem-cell donations will be held Sunday, Nov. 6, at Mendon Ponds Park. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., at Stewart Lodge, followed by the two-mile walk at noon.

The event raises money to help increase the number of people in the national registry of bone marrow and stem cell donors, and to support patient care initiatives at the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Christopher’s Challenge was created when a local boy, Christopher Costello, relapsed with leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant.  The local group sponsors several bone marrow drives and funds raised help cover unanticipated expenses associated with bone marrow transplants.

Organizers hope to raise $14,000 and half of the funds will pay for the blood typing of potential marrow donors who are joining the national marrow registry.  The remainder will support the Wilmot Blood and Marrow Transplant Program.
