Football Legend Marv Levy to Speak Sept. 11
Former Buffalo Bills Coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Marv Levy will be the keynote speaker at Men’s Health Day on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rochester.
Levy’s address will be a highlight of the annual University of Rochester Medical Center event, now in its fifth year. Geared to men ages 45 and up to inspire and empower them to take the lead in their own health care, Men’s Health Day will feature more than a dozen top medical specialists who will speak and lead discussions in areas of sports injury, cancer, prostate health, resiliency in aging and more. This year Men’s Health Day has been expanded to accommodate 500 attendees and will include breakout sessions, health screenings, hands-on demonstrations on robotic surgery, lunch and refreshments.
A towering figure in the field of professional sports, Levy is best known in western New York for bringing the Buffalo Bills to four straight Super Bowls, an unparalleled accomplishment in the National Football League. He is the most successful coach in the team’s history with a 123-78 record.
An intellectual and analytical leader, Levy’s personality goes far beyond the sports scene. A Phi Beta Kappa with a master’s degree in English from Harvard, Levy used his education to motivate and shape the careers and lives of many pro football athletes including Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas. According to Thomas, “Coach Levy is one of the most inspirational people that I have ever known. He helped to change our lives on and off the field.”
Hired as Buffalo Bills coach at the age of 61, Levy has been aptly quoted as saying, “The age factor means nothing to me. I'm old enough to know my limitations and I'm young enough to exceed them.” An outstanding example of successful aging, Levy retired from coaching in December 1997 at age 72, after a 47-year coaching career. In 1995 he underwent treatment for prostate cancer. He returned to the Bills in 2005 and served as general manager for two years before once again retiring. He continues an active lifestyle, performing speaking engagements as well as championing favorite charities and spending time with his family.
Tickets for the event are $10. Deadline for registration is August 28. Tickets can be ordered by phone at (585)275-2838. For more information, visit www.menshealth.urmc.edu.
