Dansville, New York - Attendance was high, and the feedback was enthusiastic at the Second Annual Noyes Mental Health Art Show held on May 22nd at Noyes Hospital. The event, which took place in the main lobby of the hospital, showcased a wide variety of artwork that patients of the Mental Health Clinic had completed as part of their therapeutic journey to mental wellness. Included in the exhibit were paintings, clay sculptures, mandalas and other intriguing pieces created by children and adult patients. The Art Show, entitled, “Creative Expression Is……….” showcased many outstanding creative art pieces while providing an opportunity for the Art Therapists of Noyes Mental Health Clinic to talk about the technique of Art Therapy as a valuable resource in the treatment of mental health conditions.
According to the American Art Therapy Association, Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.
Diane Stratton-Smith, Licensed, Board-certified Creative Arts Therapist and coordinator of the event explained, “Art therapy is an integration of psychotherapy and the creative process, and can be used with diverse age groups and populations for a wide range of goals. Art Therapy is an effective approach to relieving stress and anxiety, overcoming social and behavioral problems, processing trauma, learning how to cope with chronic pain or addiction management, exploring strong emotions, resolving emotional conflicts and it helps to increase patients’ self-esteem.”
Many of the artists that produced the colorful artwork were on hand to talk about their creations and share their experiences in working through the creative process of Art Therapy. Amy Pollard, President and CEO of Noyes Health attended the event and had an opportunity to chat with some of the artists. “I am very impressed by the talent that is displayed here today. The healing process than can occur through the integration of Art Therapy and psychological counseling is remarkable. This community is truly blessed to have caring, compassionate and highly talented therapists like Diane Stratton-Smith and the other members of the Noyes Mental Health team who demonstrate our commitment to compassionate care every day.” The exhibit is open to the public and will remain on display in the lobby of Noyes Hospital until the end of May.
