UPSIDE Study Visit Descriptions

1st Trimester Visit

Duration: 60 minutes
Location: Women’s Health Practice at Lattimore

  1. The study team will ask you questions about your health, lifestyle (including work, diet, exercise, and sleep), feelings, childhood, and pregnancy.
  2. We will show you how to collect saliva samples at home on 5 occasions soon after your visit.
  3. You will be asked to provide a urine and blood sample.
  4. You will be asked to provide contact information so that we may schedule your future visits and get in touch with you about the study.

2nd and 3rd Trimester Visits

Duration: 60 minutes
Location: Women’s Health Practice at Lattimore

  1. Repeat procedures from your first trimester visit. We will do this to examine changes in your mood, health, and hormones across pregnancy.
  2. Complete a brief task involving moving shapes around in your head.
  3. During your second trimester you will also be interviewed by our study team (by phone) about what you have eaten in the last 24 hours. These interviews last about 15-20 minutes.

Birth Visit

Duration: 30 minutes
Location: Strong Memorial Hospital

  1. Shortly after you deliver your baby, our team will collect the placenta so that we can measure it and take computerized pictures of it to study more. We will also save some pieces of the placenta and we will take blood from the cord of the placenta.
  2. Before you check out of the hospital, our team will come to your room to conduct a brief physical examination of your baby. The exam will be conducted by a trained Study Coordinator and will include:

A)   weight, length, and head circumference;
B)   skinfold thickness, which tells us about “baby fat”;
C)   measurements of the baby’s genitals, which tell us about the hormone environment inside of you;
D)   swabbing your baby’s rectum with a sterile Q-tip to learn about the healthy bacteria living in your baby’s body

  1. At the time of the physical examination, we will also examine what your baby likes to look at. To do this, we will videotape your baby’s face as he lies in the bassinet with different mobiles overhead. We will also ask you to answer a few brief questions about your infant and the birth, and we will confirm your current contact information.
  2. We will collect nail clippings from your baby (fingers and/or toes.)

9 Month and 15 Month Visits

Duration: 90 minutes
Location: Strong Memorial Hospital
You will be asked to bring your baby back to Strong Memorial.

  1. We will repeat the physical measurements we did at birth (length, weight, head circumference, genital measurements, and skinfold thickness) so that we can see how your baby has grown.
  2. We will again swab your baby’s rectum with a sterile q-tip to see how the bacteria living in your baby’s body have changed since birth.
  3. We will collect a saliva sample from your baby.
  4. We will again collect nail clippings from your baby (fingers and/or toes.)
  5. We will examine your baby’s problem-solving abilities, social behavior, and toy preferences using a computerized system.
  6. We will ask you questions about the health and well-being of you and your baby (including diet, child care, your home environment, and lifestyle) and confirm your contact information. You will also complete questionnaires on your mood and emotions as well as a word task and a task that involves moving shapes around in your head.
