Sports Medicine

High School Program

Since prevention of sports-related injuries is the key, our certified athletic trainers work with students and school athletic trainers to prevent injuries and keep athletes participating safely in sports. While injuries can be an unfortunate part of playing sports, early recognition and treatment can prevent more serious problems and may even prevent lost practice or playing time. At UR Medicine's Orthopaedics & Physical Performance, we provider athletic training coverage and are the preferred Sports Medicine providers for many Rochester, NY area high schools including: Harley School & Allendale Columbia

Pre-participation physical examinations

Our pre-participation physicals provide more than just a pass to participate in a sport—they include a comprehensive assessment of each young athlete's starting condition including a flexibility exam, evaluation of strength, a back screen, and an agility test.

Game Coverage

  • We provide on-field evaluation of injuries to direct athletes to the appropriate care.
  • In the event of a mild traumatic brain injury on the field, we use the ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) program to evaluate the athlete's condition.
  • We offer nutritional guidance to improve players' energy levels toward the end of a game, and hydration guidelines to help players maximize performance.

Fall Saturday Walk-In Program

Between the last Saturday of August and the last Saturday of October, high school and college athletes acutely injured during an organized athletic competition, as well as recreational athletes in the community, can obtain specialized sports medicine care. UR Medicine's Sports Medicine physicians and medical staff will treat athletes for injuries including sprains, strains, contusions, and fractures or suspected fractures.

Our main medical office at Clinton Crossings in Brighton is fully staffed with a physician, X-ray technologist, and a casting and bracing specialist on Saturdays from 3-6 pm during the Fall.
