Orthopaedic Urgent Care: Easy Access to Specialized Services

May. 19, 2014
A collision on the lacrosse field results in a possible sprained ankle. A tree-trimming session brings on intense hand pain. It’s off hours so you wonder: Should you call your doctor’s office? Go to the emergency department? Seek out urgent care?

This might be the perfect time to visit an urgent care center that specializes in orthopaedic injuries, according to UR Medicine orthopaedic specialist Dr. Regis O’Keefe.

Ortho urgent care centers are run by teams that may include doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and others who know how to diagnose and treat orthopaedic injuries. Locations like UR Medicine’s Ortho Urgent Care offer convenient, same-day access to emergency care for patients of all ages.

If you’re wondering where you should turn in lieu of emergency room services or your own doctor, consider this list of what can be treated in an ortho urgent care center setting:
  • broken bones
  • sprains
  • dislocations
  • sports-related injuries
  • hand and wrist injuries
  • foot and ankle injuries
  • shoulder issues
  • closed fractures
  • tendon injuries

But ortho urgent care is not a substitute for emergency room care. Conditions that are more serious should be taken care of immediately at an ER, which provides more comprehensive, higher-skilled care.

More serious conditions, such as these, should be evaluated in an emergency room:
  • open fractures
  • cuts and lacerations
  • pediatric dislocations
  • neck and back injuries, which could be extremely serious
  • wound infections

For more information about UR Medicine’s Ortho Urgent Care, or to make an appointment (same-day appointments are usually available), call (585) 275-5321 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 weekdays; and (585) 341-9252 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. weeknights. Depending on the injury and the patient’s age, you may have a choice of being seen at UR Medicine’s locations in Brighton at Clinton Crossings, which offers evening hours, or in Greece, Penfield or Brockport at Strong West.
