What Makes Us Unique

The Division’s Children’s Heart Center at URMC is a Strong Regional Program

An integrated program, the Children’s Heart Center’s expertise and collaborative team approach provides care for children from across upstate New York. Well-known for our cardiovascular medical and surgical services and outcomes for children with congenital heart conditions, we are ranked as one of the best children’s heart centers in New York state. Inpatients are housed in a dedicated Pediatric Cardiac Care Center providing centralized care for surgical and medical patients. A close collaboration with pediatric cardiologists in Syracuse to the east and Buffalo to the west, allows the best possible care for virtually any pediatric cardiac service upstate New York’s children might need.

Outstanding Board Pass Rates

100% of our most recent graduating fellows have passed their pediatric cardiology subspecialty board exam on the first try. A high level of clinical and research mentorship throughout fellowship training has contributed to this exceptional board pass rate.

Research Funding

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology participates as a sub-site for the Yale University Center of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-sponsored Pediatric Cardiac Genomics Consortium (PCGC). The PCGC is part of the Bench to Bassinet Program, which also includes the Cardiovascular Development Consortium and the Pediatric Heart Network.

Department Support and Mentorship

The Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Vice Chair of Education meet quarterly with fellows from our 11 subspecialty training programs in an informal roundtable setting to offer mentorship and research guidance. The Department of Pediatrics provides financial support for each fellow to present at one national conference per year as this contributes to their professional development and hones their presentation and networking skills.

State-of-the-Art Children's Hospital

Golisano Children's Hospital at URMC opened a freestanding state-of-the-art children’s hospital in 2015. It encompasses nearly 245,000 square feet of space dedicated to children and their families. Phase II, completed in late 2017, included a new pediatric cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory, operating rooms, and the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit.
