Research Projects

Obesity

We study childhood and adolescent obesity both from the perspective of epidemiologic research on cardiovascular risk factors and from the perspective of clinical studies aimed at prevention and treatment.

  • The first area of research is focused on the Metabolic Syndrome, a cluster of metabolic and cardiovascular complications of obesity involving excess abdominal fat, elevated cholesterols, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and high blood glucose.

  • The other area of focus is Community and Health Services Research, involving identification, screening, prevention, and management of childhood obesity.

PLAN

PLAN (Primary Care Pediatrics, Learning, Activity and Nutrition) is a longitudinal multi-site NIH study including over 100 families from the Rochester area. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of a family-based program provided in the primary care setting. Families with children between the ages of 6-12 years will be engaged for approximately 2 years in a study that encourages healthy eating habits and promotes healthy lifestyle changes. The purpose of the study is to understand better if family based treatment, embedded within the primary care setting, is more effective for treatment of obesity/overweight than usual care.

NYS Breastfeeding

The “Creating Breastfeeding Friendly Communities” grant is a joint venture with the University of Rochester Medical Center and Monroe County Department of Health with five goals: expand the work of the Rochester Regional Breastfeeding Coalition, which works to normalize breastfeeding by providing lactation education and support services; increase the number of Baby Cafes© where breastfeeding women receive support from their peers and lactation consultants; increase the number of worksites that provide accommodations for breastfeeding employees; and increase the number of day care centers and health care practices serving Medicaid-eligible women and their children that achieve the state’s Breastfeeding Friendly Designation.  http://rochesterregionalbreastfeedingcoalition.com/
