Educational Activities

Seminars and Conferences

Fellows in the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship attend regularly scheduled conferences, some of which are shared with the division of adult nephrology with which there is strong collaboration.

Department Conferences & Meetings

The Department of Pediatrics hosts a variety of conferences and meetings that enhance clinical and research training, meet ABP and ACGME requirements, and give our fellows an opportunity to interact with well-established clinicians and researchers, both internal and external to URMC.

Pediatric Nephrology Clinical Conference

Fellows and residents present an in-depth review of a particularly interesting kidney topic related to a current clinical case. One session per month is devoted to reviewing the status of all peritoneal dialysis patients.

Adult/Pediatric Joint Journal Club

A recent article from nephrology literature is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on articles which stress mechanisms of disease or basic biological processes.

Fellows' Pathophysiology Seminar Series

Adult and pediatric trainees and faculty members read and discuss a seminal nephrology textbook over the course of the year. This team-oriented approach promotes active didactic learning.

Pediatric Nephrology Pathology Conference

Pediatric kidney biopsies are reviewed with kidney pathologists. The use of a multi-headed microscope allows pathology and nephrology attendings and fellows to review the biopsy slides together. This strong interaction facilitates learning kidney pathology and sparks lively discussions about prognosis and treatment.

Pediatric Nephrology/Urology Conference

Trainees and faculty present cases and literature involving kidney abnormalities requiring both medical and surgical management. Topics may include: congenital anomalies of the kidneys and genitourinary tract; renal physiology and pathophysiology; and urologic disorders.

Pediatric Transplant Clinical Conference

This is a multidisciplinary conference attended by trainees, faculty and staff from pediatric nephrology, pediatric urology, and solid organ transplantation to discuss active issues with patients both pre- and post-transplantation.

Summer Pediatric Nephrology Fellows’ Core Curriculum Series

Weekly; first year only, July-October

Division faculty present one-on-one didactic lectures to first year fellows on core topics including acute renal failure and chronic kidney disease. This format provides an ideal environment for learning the basics of pediatric nephrology.

Renal Grand Rounds

Speakers with expertise in nephrology present to a combined audience of adult and pediatric nephrologists. The conference is devoted to new developments in clinical nephrology, clinical research and basic science research.

Dialysis Quality Review

This is an interdisciplinary meeting attended by the trainee, pediatric nephrologists, social work, nutrition, and dialysis nursing to review current management of the chronic dialysis patients.
