The University of Rochester Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Fellowship Program is a two-year ACGME-accredited program.

  • The overall goal of our program is to provide an educational experience that will develop physicians who successfully embrace the role of clinician, educator, and investigator.
  • Fellows will receive a high level of guidance from faculty in developing their clinical and research skills.
  • Fellows will obtain a vast amount of clinical experience due to the volume and diversity of patients in our inpatient settings.
  • Research will be a longitudinal experience throughout the two-year fellowship program. Division research interests are diverse and include: transition to home after hospital discharge, quality improvement and safety, education of residents and medical students, and transitions of care from pediatric to adult providers.

Whether you want to pursue training in quality, clinical research, medical education, or public health, we are able to provide a strong education in any area that may interest you.

Our Mission

Our mission is to improve child health by training pediatric hospital medicine fellows to become leaders in clinical care, research, and quality improvement, thereby providing a path for each hospitalized infant, child and adolescent to reach their fullest potential through a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach that engages caregivers, clinicians, staff, and community members/organizations.

Program Aims

  • To train pediatric hospital medicine fellows to provide high quality patient care across the age and diagnosis spectrum, including acute illness and complex chronic conditions through the acquisition and application of a comprehensive knowledge base, proficiency in hospital medicine interventions and procedures, and compassionate and effective communication skills.
  • To cultivate pediatric hospital medicine fellows who will provide state-of-the-art and informed care through the development and demonstration of fundamental skills in research and quality improvement, including the critical evaluation of medical literature and therapeutic strategies, advancement and integration of new knowledge into practice, and enhancement of patient safety and quality of care.
  • To develop pediatric hospital medicine fellows with the skills to become leaders of a multidisciplinary team, serving as a role model and educator for all members of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine team and as a consultant and collaborator with all children’s services in the institution and community, while gaining an introduction to the skill set of a successful pediatric hospitalist.

Maha Kaissi

"After completing my pediatrics residency and chief residency here, I decided to stay for my fellowship as well because of how much I love our Pediatric Hospital Medicine division! I knew that the program director and associate program director would be great mentors for helping me start my career path in PHM, and I am excited that the faculty in our division have such varied clinical and research interests since it opens so many possibilities for my fellowship. When I moved here from Houston for residency, I was a little worried about leaving the restaurants and activities of a big city, but I was completely surprised by the amazing food, arts, and festivals in Rochester! This is definitely a wonderful and welcoming city for all!"

“I chose URMC because I was impressed with how friendly and supportive the PHM attending’s were during my interview. As I complete my first week on service, I know that I made the right decision. I am already building relationships with mentors and creating an oversight committee for my research – very exciting! Further, when I started I wondered what life would be like in Rochester coming from coastal Maine, a place with great outdoor access. I can honestly say that Rochester is just as good: world class mountain biking, incredible hiking at Letchworth, and every watersport imaginable. Life is good here.”
