Advantages

The fellowship is onsite and  takes place in the laboratory or program of a faculty member of the Department of Pediatrics.  Secondary mentors can be drawn from SCRC affiliated faculty.  It may involve bench, clinical, or health services research in the Department of Pediatrics or the Center for Child Health Research.

The David Hamilton Smith Year-Out Fellowship offers:

  • An opportunity to pursue other interests in medicine that may be difficult to pursue during the traditional curriculum
  • A focused, in-depth exploration of the fundamentals of basic science and/or clinical research techniques
  • An opportunity to experience a taste for the life of an academic pediatrician: in the lab, the classroom, and the clinic without a life time commitment
  • Exposure  to all facets of research life: conceptualization and design, data collection, data analysis, presentation and publication
  • Time for personal and professional growth and reflection

In addition to the OME approved stipend for medical students, which is $18,000 for students eligible for federal work-study, the Smith Research Fellowship provides $5,000 to the sponsor to pay for travel to meetings, preparation of manuscripts and abstracts and to help support the research.
