What Makes Us Unique

Our three-year, ACGME-accredited program provides fellows with a rigorous research experience to support and inspire their own growth to make substantive contributions to the body of research in pediatric infectious diseases.

Extensive Funding

Research activities in the division are heavily supported through a variety of extramural funding agencies including National Institutes of Health, Center for Disease Control, private foundations, and industry.

NACHRI recently ranked the Department of Pediatrics 15th in NIH funding, based on total dollars awarded, ranking just below Yale University. This means a significant increase in research opportunities for our fellows.

Abundant Clinical and Research Opportunities

Golisano Children’s Hospital has a breadth of active clinical services and divisions which bring patients from throughout western New York, allowing ID fellows to experience facets of different types of infections across many specialties, including the immunocompromised host.

The respected researchers on our faculty have active research agendas and make valuable contributions to the field of pediatric infectious diseases. Our fellows work closely with them in their research endeavors.

Strong Mentorship

The program director guides the incoming fellow to review current research and discuss research topics with several faculty members to select a mentor prior to starting subspecialty training.

Fellows work closely with faculty in clinical, research, and consultative forums. We have a strong collaborative relationship with Internal Medicine – Infectious Diseases. Many of our clinical and didactic sessions are attended by faculty and trainees from both groups to share their expertise and experience.

The program director consults with fellows in arranging clinical rotations to best support the development of their scholarly work. Our fellows have protected research time to focus on scientific inquiry.
