William H. Eilinger Chair
and Professor,

Welcome to the Education and Training Programs of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry! Our unique dedication to training the next generation of physicians and scientists and our passion for mentoring at every trainee and faculty level set us apart from our peers and make us a “destination” for those aiming to launch a career dedicated to the health and well-being of children and their families. The Rochester biopsychosocial model and double helix curriculum are at the very heart of what makes our trainees and faculty understand development and disease in their physiological, psychological, and social contexts and understand children and families in their hospital rooms, outpatient clinics, and communities.

What’s so Special About Rochester’s Pediatric Education and Training Programs?

For our medical students, we have a hands-on, field trip-replete Pediatric Interest Group program; a special year-out research program in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics; community-based outpatient rotations; inpatient rotations and acting internships that span from the PICU to the NICU to our 14 other subspecialty services. From Morning Report to nights on-call, you will feel welcomed and nurtured and challenged.

For our pediatrics and med-peds residents, we live and breathe adult learning. You will be the masters of your own fate, working up your patients and deciding on a course of action, all in the context of guidance and mentoring and graded levels of responsibility as you progress in your training. Didactic conferences will keep you on the right path and prepare you for your Board exams and life after residency. You will experience first-hand community hospital and academic hospital inpatient services; primary and subspecialty outpatient care; quality improvement, patient- and family-centered care, and family-centered rounding; and any and all of those things that make YOU special, whether it’s our Research Track, our Community Advocacy Residency Education (CARE) Track, our Primary Care Track, or our Global Pediatrics Track. You will help us shape our program to what you and your colleagues and your successors need most as you prepare for your careers.

For our fellows, we offer cutting-edge clinical mentoring in 14 subspecialty and general pediatrics areas; clinical, translational, and basic research experiences that span the entire medical center and community; mentoring committees and scholarship oversight that work with you towards who you want to be and what you want to learn; and resources like a monthly research seminar series, weekly grand rounds presentations, monthly meetings with the department chair; and prestigious grant funding like our T32 fellowship program, our K12 junior faculty program (just in case you stick around when your fellowship is done!), and Masters degree programs in Public Health and Clinical Research.

Come visit us! Feel the passion for training and mentoring that fuels our legacy of excellence and advocacy in health care, research, and community service. Help us ensure that each successive generation of children enjoys better health, happier tomorrows, and the promise of safe and productive communities.
