Professional Bio

I received my undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1988 and received my M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1993. While in medical school, I spent a year researching tumor immunology in mice, but decided that a career in general medicine suited me better. I completed residency in internal medicine here at Strong Memorial Hospital in 1996 and then joined the General Medicine Unit as a clinician-educator with a focus on inpatient care. In 1998, I began developing the hospitalist service which has grown significantly over the past decade and a half.

In 2005, I became chief of the newly-created Hospital Medicine Division and continue to serve in this role. The Hospital Medicine Division is a large inpatient teaching service for residents, students, and advance practice providers (NP's and PA's). The service is known for consistently high volume, quality, and efficiency of patient care. The division employs approximately 25 faculty members who make over 35,000 inpatient visits annually. Hospital Medicine Division faulty are active leaders in inpatient education and quality improvement activities.

Patient Care Bio

I am an academic (teaching) general internist who practices both inpatient and outpatient care. I am most active clinically as a hospitalist, but I have a small primary care practice within the General Medicine Division's Strong Internal Medicine practice. This gives me a unique perspective on the importance of good communication and transition between the inpatient and outpatient settings. I remain passionate about general internal medicine as I believe the general approach truly acknowledges and respects the whole person in matters that affect patients' overall health and well-being, particularly in times of serious illness.
