Biography

Dr. Garfunkel continues to see patients and precept residents and medical students in pediatric primary care in both the Pediatric and the Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics practices, as well providing patient care and training in the Newborn Nursery at RGH. As one of the associate program directors for two training programs, she is involved in all aspects of resident education and training, advising, and mentoring at the University of Rochester.

Research

Dr. Garfunkel's area of interest is in pediatric resident training and education as well as in primary care pediatrics. She completed a four year tenure on the Board of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD), and has been involved with many projects related to Pediatric Resident Graduate Medical education. She continues to serve on the leadership committee of the Continuity Clinic SIG of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association (APA) and was the former chair of Region III CORNET (COntinuity clinic Research NETwork). She has been involved in many projects involving improvement of training for pediatric residents in primary care as well as improving outcomes for patients cared for in continuity clinics. Interest in behavioral and mental health training in residency, has led to local and national involvement in integrative mental health training in continuity clinics. She has collaborated on many projects related to residency education from self-determination theory and resident autonomy, to reflective practice, professionalism, QI, and implicit bias as well as integrated behavioral and mental health training. As a primary-care clinician and pediatric educator, Dr. Garfunkel realizes the importance of point-of-care clinical references for busy clinicians which resulted in editorship of both the Pediatric Clinical Advisor (Mosby/Elsevier) and the Bright Futures Preventive Manual. Dr. Garfunkel sits on the editorial board of Pediatrics In Review and is currently serving a 6-year term on the Pediatric Residency Review Committee (Pediatric R(R)C)) of the ACGME.
