Biography

Dr. Garfunkel continues to see patients and precept residents and medical students in pediatric primary care in both the Pediatric and the Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics practices, as well as the Newborn Nursery at RGH. She is involved with the Patient Centered Medical Home project in RGPA, as well as a national project of the APA for educational initiatives in residency training regarding the Patient Centered Medical Home.

Research

Dr. Garfunkel's area of interest is in pediatric resident training and education as well as in primary care pediatrics. She completed a 4 year tenure on the Board of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD), and has been involved with many projects related to Pediatric Resident Graduate Medical education. As the Region III chair of CORNET (COntinuity clinic Research NETwork), a research network that evolved through the Ambulatory Pediatric Association--she participates in projects involving quality of care for patients who receive their primary care in a Continuity clinic and education of residents in Continuity clinic; additionally she serves on the leadership committee of the Continuity Clinic SIG of the APA. Interest in behavioral and mental health training in residency, has led to several projects in collaborative mental health training in continuity clinics. She developed and implemented resident QI training in Rochester and is involved with advancing Global health education in pediatric training programs. She has presented with other members of the division on an Innovation in Pediatric Education (IIPE) project involving self-determination theory and resident autonomy and is currently working with colleagues on reflective practice. As a primary-care clinician and pediatric educator, Dr. Garfunkel realizes the importance of point-of-care clinical references for busy clinicians which has resulted in editorship of both the Pediatric Clinical Advisor (Mosby/Elsevier) and the Bright Futures Preventive Manual. Most recently Dr. Garfunkel has joined the editorial board of Pediatrics In Review.
