Biography

Dr Swantz is an attending neonatologist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Golisano Children's Hospital and in the Special Care Nursery at Rochester General Hospital. He is the Medical Director of the Neonatal Transport Team and is the Physician Advisor in Utilization Management for the Department of Pediatrics.

Professional Background

Dr. Swantz finished his Pediatrics residency at the University of Rochester in 1990 and returned to Rochester to join the faculty three years later, directly out of his neonatology fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. In 1995 he became involved in the Department of Pediatrics' medical student education programs as the Associate Clerkship Director. He assumed directorship of the 3rd year Clerkship and 4th year Sub-Internship in Pediatrics in 2000 and was responsible for re-designing the Pediatrics Clerkship for the Double-Helix Curriculum. Over the years he has had numerous opportunities to work with the Dean's office on curriculum development, student assessment, admissions, and promotions/review.

Dr. Swantz stepped down from his course leadership roles in 2018, and now focuses his efforts on utilization management and professional/hospital billing. He currently is the Physician Advisor in Utilization Management for the Department of Pediatrics.

In 1998 Dr. Swantz became the Medical Director of the Neonatal Transport Team and coordinated the re-design of the system to a predominantly nurse-respiratory therapist model. He continues to oversee that transport program and has trained over 100 nurses and respiratory therapists with advanced skills and knowledge in neonatology.

Research

Dr. Swantz's scholarly interests include undergraduate medical education, utilization management, and transport medicine.
