Dr Swantz is an attending neonatologist in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Golisano Children's Hospital and in the Special Care Nursery at Rochester General Hospital. He is also the medical director of the Neonatal Transport Team.

Professional Background

Dr. Swantz finished his pediatrics residency at the University of Rochester in 1990 and joined the Rochester faculty three years later directly out of his neonatology fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Soon thereafter he became involved in the Department of Pediatrics' medical student education programs as the associate clerkship director. In 2000 he assumed directorship of the 3rd year clerkship and 4th year sub-internship in Pediatrics and served in those roles for 18 years. He was responsible for re-designing the clerkship for the Double-Helix Curriculum and has had numerous opportunities to work with the Dean's office on curriculum development, student assessment, admissions, and promotions/review. In 1998 he became the medical director of the Neonatal Transport Team and spearheaded the re-design of the system to a predominantly nurse-respiratory therapist model. Dr. Swantz has continued to oversee that transport program and has trained over 100 nurses and respiratory therapists with advanced skills and knowledge in neonatology.

Dr. Swantz's scholarly interests include undergraduate medical education and transport medicine. For 18 years he directed the 3rd year clerkship and 4th year sub-internship for medical students in the Department of Pediatrics, and was involved with the Dean's office in the design, implementation, management and evaluation of the medical school curriculum. Dr. Swantz now serves as the Medical Director for the Neonatal Transport Team.
