Biography

Professional Background

Jefferson Svengsouk, M.D., M.B.A., is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine, and subspecialty board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. (As of January 2015, there were 114 American Board of Emergency Medicine diplomates who hold the distinction of certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine). Dr. Svengsouk practices emergency medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital, UR Medicine, as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine. He also practices hospice and palliative medicine as a palliative care consultant with the Palliative Care Division. Dr. Svengsouk graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine, and from the University of Rochester Simon School of Business Administration. His specialty training in emergency medicine and subspecialty training in hospice and palliative medicine were at the University of Rochester. He was trained in ultrasound at the Jefferson Ultrasound Research and Education Institute, and at the SUNY Buffalo Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Svengsouk served as the founding director of the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound program at UR Medicine Strong Memorial Hospital for over a decade, personally training over 100 Emergency Medicine residents and fellows in point-of-care ultrasound, providing continuing medical education introductory emergency ultrasound courses to practicing emergency physicians at multiple western New York hospitals, and giving international emergency ultrasound education in Hue, Vietnam. He continues to serve as Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Director. Dr. Svengsouk has an interest in therapeutic music, playing live music for patients at the bedside with Native American flute, and is a student of the Music for Healing and Transition Program. He serves as board member with the National Standards Board for Therapeutic Music.
