Biography

Professional Background

Dr. Gwy Suk Seo obtained her medical degree at Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea in 1984 and completed rotating internship and diagnostic radiology residency training at Seoul National University Hospital in 1989 when she was awarded life-time Korean board certification in Diagnostic Radiology. After working as a staff radiologist and a faculty at Hanil General Hospital and Hallym University Medical Center, she pursued a postgraduate academic career and earned a Ph.D. in medical science from Shinshu University in Matsumoto, Japan while working as a musculoskeletal fellow for 4 years. Then she came to the United States as a visiting researcher in 1997 and completed a clinical fellowship in Musculoskeletal radiology at the University of Rochester. She obtained her second, and American Board of Radiology Certification in 2008 and is currently working as an associate professor of Imaging Sciences. After working as a musculoskeletal radiologist for 8 years at the University of Rochester, she joined the new departmental venture-Emergency Radiology 24-7 coverage. She is now Chief of the Emergency Radiology section and working to improve the after-hours patient care. Dr. Seo is an active member of Radiological Society of North America, International Skeletal Society, Society of Skeletal Radiology and American Society of Emergency Radiology. Through her basic research and clinical work, she has over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles to her credit and actively participates in annual national and international meetings. Her research interests are cartilage imaging, trauma and bone pathophysiology.

A specialist in Musculoskeletal Imaging and Emergency Imaging, Dr. Seo works closely with fellow clinicians to optimize treatment for their acutely ill and trauma patients. She is utilizing the extended work hours to establish and improve the service by the emergency radiology section, and to maximize educational benefits for residents and fellows. She is a strong proponent of using imaging wisely and often uses her radiological skill to identify problems which will help to prevent, or early detect, chronic disease. With her professional career in multiple different cultural settings and her experience in clinical, research and educational realms, she will bring a new perspective in imaging sciences in the coming years when a new paradigm in health care is desperately anticipated.
