Biography

Professional Background

My degrees in physics at the University of Rochester (BS, 2002-2006) and biophysics at The Ohio State University (PhD, 2006-2011) provided skills in writing, solving complex problems, computer programming, and the scientific method for experimental laboratory work. My undergraduate research used computational approaches to study subatomic particles, whereas my graduate work addressed the biochemistry and structural biology of how the flexibility of proteins contributes to their biological function. My post-doctoral fellowship at Northeastern University (2011-2015) – including two summer sabbaticals to the Laureate Institute for Brain Research – focused on investigating the role of the body in emotions using psychophysiology and brain fMRI. After my postdoctoral fellowship I began applying my basic scientific skills and my interests in exercise to an important public health problem: cancer. I was particularly drawn to work at the University of Rochester Cancer Control Unit (2015-Current) because of their successful research program using exercise to reduce side-effects from cancer and its treatment.

Research

Dr. Kleckner's work aims to ameliorate the symptoms of cancer and its treatment by leveraging an understanding how the brain processes the state of the body. He uses methods from psychophysiology (measuring heartbeats, skin conductance), brain imaging (fMRI), and exercise science with computational approaches honed from his background from physics and biophysics.
