Biography

Dr. Hindman is a clinician scientist who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of corneal diseases, cataract, dry eye, and refractive error. Her research is focused on understanding the biological basis of the disease processes and the associated impact on ocular optics. Dr. Hindman is a Rochester, NY native who returned to the area after completing her education at Stanford University and Harvard Medical School and her residency training in Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. She completed her fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive surgery at the Flaum Eye Institute. Dr. Hindman's expertise is in the management of corneal diseases, cataract, dry eye, and refractive error. Clinical and surgical services provided by Dr. Hindman include: Corneal transplantation surgery: Dr. Hindman utilizes a targeted approach to corneal transplantation, focally replacing the damaged or diseased portions of the cornea, when possible. In some cases, full thickness corneal transplantation is required. - DSAEK (Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) and DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) for the treatment of endothelial failure secondary to Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy or post- cataract surgery corneal edema. - DALK (Deep Anterior Lamella Keratoplasty) for the treatment of keratoconus, corneal scars, or corneal dystrophies. - PK (Penetrating Keratoplasty) for the treatment of conditions requiring the entire cornea to be replaced. Keratoprosthesis: In some cases where vision through donor corneal transplantation would not be viable, Dr. Hindman offers keratoprosthesis. Cataract: Dr. Hindman specializes in the treatment of cataract. Her practice incorporates the latest technologies, including femtosecond-laser assisted cataract surgery and the use of premium intraocular lenses. Many of Dr. Hindman's patients also will have cataract and corneal transplantation surgeries performed simultaneously if indicated. Dr. Hindman will work with you to help you understand which option is best for you. - Femtosecond-laser assisted cataract surgery - Crystalens - Toric IOL - Implantable Miniature telescope (for patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration) Ocular surface surgery: Ocular surface surgery may be indicated for pterygium, ocular surface neoplasia, band keratopathy. Dry Eye: Dr. Hindman is the founder of the Dry Eye Clinic at the Flaum Eye Institute. This specialty services provides comprehensive dry eye assessment and management, utilizes a team approach, and is in frequent communication with other specialists (Rheumatology, Immunology, Neurology, Oral Medicine) through our Sjogren's Network. Laser Surgeries: Dr. Hindman provides medically indicated and elective surgeries including: - Laser Refractive Correction (LASIK, PRK) - Phototherapeutic Keratectomy - YAG Capsulotomy

Research

Dr. Hindman is interested in understanding the biological basis for corneal and ocular surface diseases and the impact of those disease processes on optical outcomes. She frequently collaborates with other scientists at the Flaum Eye Institute and the University of Rochester, many times incorporating the use of advanced imaging instrumentation developed at the University of Rochester. Her work is translational, spanning basic wet lab science, preclinical models, and clinical research.
