Dr. Zhongren (David) Zhou is a surgical and cytopathologist with interests in gastrointestinal pathology, in particular esophageal pathology. He performs translational research using tissue microarrays and banked frozen tissue specimens to study the gene amplification, overexpression and molecular changes in esophageal cancer. The goal of these studies is to discover new biomarkers for early diagnosis and/or for screening of patients at high risk for esophageal cancer development.


I am an associate professor in University of Rochester with subspecialized GI and cytology practice. I am very interested in translational research on the esophageal carcinoma and precancerous lesions. I am developing a new screening test for Barrett's esophagous and other precancerous lesions.This new screening method will combine cytology, immunohistochemistry and next generation sequencing to find patients with Barrett's esophagus and predict the high risk patients for esophageal adenocarcinoma. In addition, I am involved in studying a new diagnosis method for the recurrent esophageal adenocarcinoma with blood sample and next generation sequencing. I also join the TCGA GI committee in National Cancer Institute to detect the genetic mutation related with esophageal carcinoma and gastric adenocarcinoma and American Society of Cytopathology, Research and Current Concepts Committee (review abstracts and presentation for Awards).
