Biography

Professional Background

Dr. Nadejda Stefanova Stephens is originally from Bulgaria and graduated from the
Medical Academy of Plovdiv - Bulgaria, Faculty of Stomatology in 1992 where she obtained her DMD degree. She continued her education with a 4-year Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) residency and upon completion, received a specialty license in Bulgaria in 1997. As a member of the Union of Bulgarian Scientists and The International Medical Association “Bulgaria” (IMAB), Dr. Stephens was awarded a one-year fellowship in OMFS at the Hebrew University, Faculty of Dentistry in Jerusalem, Israel, which she completed in 1997. Upon returning to her home country, Dr. Stephens continued her professional career as a contractor for the Bulgarian Navy and as part time OMFS faculty at the Medical University of Varna. In September 1998, she immigrated to the United States and continued her professional education with a 3-year (1998-2001) OMFS research fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas; a 1-year (2007-2008) Comprehensive Dentistry program at NYU, College of Dentistry; a 2-year (2008-2010) Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH), University of Rochester; a 1-year (2010-2011) General Practice Residency (GPR) at Rochester General Hospital and a 1-year (2011-2012) OMFS Internship at the Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY.

Currently, Dr. Stephens is an Assistant Professor, a member of the GPR Faculty in the Department of Dentistry at EIOH, University of Rochester and serves as the Associate Director of the recently established Specialty Care dental clinic. The Specialty Care scope of practice serves patient populations including geriatric, bariatric, perinatal, medically complex, mildly intellectually disabled, and wheelchair bound.

Dr. Stephens is currently enrolled in the Health Care Education master’s degree program at the Warner School of Education, University of Rochester. She is involved in training GPR residents and mentoring their clinical activities and research. Dr. Stephens was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Special Care and Hospital Dentistry and was appointed as Chair of the Benefits Committee of the Faculty Senate, at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
