Biography

Professional Background

The University of Rochester Medical Center is pleased to announce the addition of Francisco J. Gensini, MD as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. A native of Cali, Colombia, Dr. Gensini joins us from Seattle Children's Hospital in Seattle, Washington, where he was one of the first ACGME approved fellows in congenital cardiac surgery in the United States.

Dr. Gensini received his undergraduate degree from Colegio Colombo Británico in Cali, Colombia. He then went on to earn his degree in medicine and surgery from Universidad del Valle, also in Cali, Colombia, followed by a general surgery residency. Dr. Gensini later received a degree in cardiovascular surgery from Fundación – Clínica Cardiovascular Santa María, College of Medicine of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellín, Colombia.

In addition to filling the role of attending physician in cardiothoracic surgery at the Fundación – Clínica Valle del Lili in Cali, Dr. Gensini completed a two-year fellowship in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, United Kingdom. This was followed by an ECMO fellowship in the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care. Since coming to the United States, Dr. Gensini has also held the positions of resident physician and chief resident physician in general surgery as well as fellow in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington.

Board eligible by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Gensini is a member of professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, The Henry N. Harkins Surgical Society, the American College of Cardiology and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. His professional interests include transposition of the great arteries, single ventricle physiology, tetralogy of fallot, coartation of the aorta and atrioventricular canal defects, among others.
