Dr. Schmidt's clinical service is in Transfusion Medicine with subspecialty involvement in laboratory coagulation/thrombosis testing.

Professional Background

Dr. Schmidt trained in Clinical Pathology at Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis. Following her residency, she completed a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. She then went to SUNY Upstate and completed a fellowship in Hematopathology. Dr. Schmidt served as the Director of Apheresis and Cell Therapy at Indiana University prior to coming to the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Dr. Schmidt's research interests focus on understanding coagulation, microparticles, and inflammation in burn patients, exploring the role of microparticles in microangiopathic hemolytic anemias, understanding the role of oxidative reductive potential (ORP) in pediatric heart surgery and intensive care patients, exploring the correlation of ORP in the age of red blood cells, understanding the effects of platelet and plasma transfusion in patients undergoing elective procedures, understanding the effects of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) on coagulation, studying what is in the bag during extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) procedures and why ECP is effective in graft versus host disease and organ rejection, and exploration of stem cell collection practices and collection efficiencies.
