Professional Background

Professor Catherine K. Kuo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Orthopaedics, and the Center for Musculoskeletal Research Center. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Rochester, she was an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University, and also held a visiting scientist position in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Langer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. She completed her postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Cartilage Biology and Orthopaedics Branch directed by Dr. Rocky S. Tuan within the NIAMS. She received her PhD in Biomaterials and Macromolecular Science and Engineering (in the laboratory of Dr. Peter X. Ma) and her BSE in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Professor Kuo received the Award for Innovation in Research at the Go:Life Orthopaedics Conference in Gothenburg Sweden in 2015. In the same year, she also received the distinction of Emerging Investigator by Stem Cell Research and Therapy. Additionally, she received the prestigious NSF CAREER Award in 2013 and the March of Dimes Basil O'Connor Starter Scholar Research Award in 2011. She was invited by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) as one of only 15 outstanding US engineers under the age of 45 to participate in the 2013 German-American Frontiers of Engineering Meeting. She has served within many distinguished organizations including the Orthopaedic Research Society, Biomedical Engineering Society, and Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society. She is on the advisory council for the International Society of Ligaments and Tendons and the editorial review board for Journal of Orthopaedic Research, and serves as an ad hoc reviewer of grant proposals for the NIH, NSF, DoD, and other federal government agencies.


Professor Catherine K. Kuo directs a multidisciplinary research team of engineers, biologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and sports medicine doctors that are working together to develop innovative stem cell-based musculoskeletal tissue engineering and regenerative medicine strategies. The primary goals are to develop clinically translatable outcomes for the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries and diseases, and for the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal birth defects.
