Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Pediatrics

Dr. Kerkar has been involved in the management of children and adolescents with liver disease and liver transplants for over two decades. She has done her postgraduate training at King's College Hospital, London, UK and has been the Medical director of the Pediatric Transplant Programs at Mount Sinai in New York and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, before joining us. She will be building a multidisciplinary liver transplant service in collaboration with the adult transplant service as well as her colleagues in Pediatrics, so that liver transplants in children and adolescents can occur successfully locally. She will also be establishing services to ensure early and correct diagnosis of pediatric liver diseases as well as management of those with complex liver diseases. She has been named to the American Pediatric Society in 2014. She is a member of several national societies and work-groups. She has lectured nationally and internationally and regularly reviews manuscripts for journals.

Dr. Kerkar has been involved in several multi-center studies funded by the NIDDK, FDA and pharmaceutical companies. She hopes to get some of the research studies started here, so that her patients can have access to diagnostic tests and therapies early, and also improved outcomes. Her research interests include autoimmune liver disease, cholestatic liver diseases including biliary atresia, alagille syndrome, sclerosing cholangitis as well as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. She is also interested in studying non-invasive markers of fibrosis. She has over a 100 peer reviewed publications and is currently co-editing a book on Wilson Disease.
