Biography

Professional Background

Akram Mahmoud, DO has joined UR Medicine as an Associate Professor of Clinical
Neurosurgery and is a full-time neurosurgeon at Cayuga Medical Center. Dr. Mahmoud
treats complex brain conditions including cerebral hemorrhage (brain bleeds), aneurysms,
brain cancer and more. He also has a passion for the treatment of spine disease and
a special interest in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, He is committed to
communicating with his patients in a way that is easy to understand.

Dr. Mahmoud completed his residency training at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in
Pontiac, Michigan. He then completed a spine fellowship in neurosurgery at Wayne State
University School of Medicine in Detroit. He was previously at Grant Medical Center in
Columbus, Ohio, where he served for 12 years as Associate Residency Program Director,
Vice Chair of the Division of Neurosurgery, Interim Director of the Spine Unit and Director
of Neuro–Trauma. Most recently, he was at Novant Health in Hickory, North Carolina
where he served as the only employed neurosurgeon in Hickory, bringing complex
neurosurgical care locally to high acuity patients.

He joins Dr. Vassilios Dimopoulos at Neurosurgery Services of CMA, where he will serve as
Medical Director of the Neurosurgery Services and Spine Center, as well as the Director of
Emergency Neurosurgery Services at Cayuga Medical Center. He is Board Certified by the
American Osteopathic Board of Surgeons.
