Regulation of airway epithelial barrier is one of the new frontiers in mucosal biology with relevance to respiratory viral infections and asthma. I am interested in understanding the mechanisms involved in the airway epithelial barrier dysfunction induced by allergens, viruses, and other pathogens. Currently my lab studies the effect of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection on airway epithelial tight junction. Defining the mechanisms by which RSV disrupts epithelial structure and function should enhance our understanding of the association between respiratory viral infections, airway inflammation, and allergen sensitization.
