Diversity and Inclusion are Core Values of the Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry with over 1500 faculty and staff members, is committed to improving the well-being of the diverse communities we serve, including patients, their families, our workforce, and the surrounding community.

This commitment guides the implementation of our four mission areas of Education, Clinical Care, Research and Community Engagement.

Cultural humility guides our efforts in responding to the needs of patients, staff, faculty, and trainees from racially, ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse groups.

Cultural humility is a lifelong commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique, which includes an acknowledgment and openness to learning from others and a desire to fix power imbalances where none ought to exist.

Through the Department’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion Culture, & Equity (DICE) we communicate and disseminate educational activities and training that contribute to culturally sensitive care and support a respectful, diverse, and inclusive department environment. We facilitate and help ensure that institutional initiatives related to diversity, inclusion, and equity are communicated and adhered to.

The Department of Psychiatry's Equity & Anti-racism Plan

We know racism is a dehumanizing way of thinking which leads to behaviors that affect our mental, spiritual, and physical health. It not only affects our patients, but the professional community that is our Department of Psychiatry. At the same time that we recognize that institutional racism remains a significant problem in our society and that its presence has shaped our medical center community since its founding, we also believe that as a community, we have the courage, compassion and fortitude to overcome such racism and assure no one is alone in their struggle. We remain committed to working with our community partners, institutional leadership and our co-workers towards creating a department of psychiatry that is safe, welcoming, and nurturing for all who seek our services. We welcome conversations, although often uncomfortable, that bring us closer to an antiracist psychiatry community.
