Post-degree Certificate Program

Family picnicThe University of Rochester’s Post Degree Program in Marriage and Family Therapy is accepting applicants for Fall 2022.

The Post-degree Certificate Program in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry provides training for professionals who already have an advanced degree (MS, MD or Ph.D.), and are interested in specialty training in family therapy theory and clinical practice. Students receive education and training in the major family therapy conceptual and clinical models, theories of family development across the life cycle and relevant research. They are generally full-time employees and work in a variety of medical and community mental health settings. Post-degree courses are offered in conjunction with courses in the MS in Marriage and Family Therapy program in order to meet individual needs and goals.

Supervised clinical training occurs with a diverse client population, presenting a broad range of individual, couple and family problems. Students receive clinical placements in a range of mental health and health care settings. The Program emphasizes strength based and culturally sensitive approaches to therapy, focusing on systems of biopsychosocial integration. A rich, multi-disciplinary training context prepares creative and competent marriage and family therapists who can work in a variety of workplace environments ranging from mental health and behavioral health programs to community agencies, school based programs and medical settings.

The Program is in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. It is an integral part of the University of Rochester Institute for the Family consisting of the Family Therapy Training Program (FTTP), Family Therapy Services (FTS) and the Wynne Center for Family Research (WCFR). Students have the opportunity to gain experience by working closely with clinicians and research faculty.
