About URMC Research

MRB Research Building

Collaboration and collegiality among scientists is what sets our research apart: It’s what attracts students and trainees from around the world, draws high levels of government, foundation and corporate funding, and, most importantly, leads to discoveries that improve people’s lives.

Here, team science – researchers from different departments and disciplines working together to solve complex health problems – is the norm. This creates the perfect environment for turning basic science findings into advances in clinical care, and bringing new technologies to fruition and use beyond the University’s walls.

Rochester researchers played a key role in the development of the current HPV vaccines. We’ve transformed the care of hundreds of thousands of heart disease patients through clinical trials on implantable cardioverter defibrillators, or ICDs. And we’ve helped lead the international effort against bird flu, conducting the first major study to show that large doses of a vaccine are safe and effective at protecting people against the disease.

With an average of $250 million per year in biomedical research funding (including several departments ranking among the top 10 in NIH funding), 1 million square feet of state-of-the-art research space, and high-end support services and shared resources, we’re building upon this strong legacy of research every day.
