Feb. 26, 2014

Aram HezelThe Pancreatic Cancer Association of Western New York (PCAWNY) presented a check for $75,176 yesterday to Aram Hezel, M.D., a physician and scientist at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, and Hucky Land, Ph.D., director of research at Wilmot. The group raised the money at the 4th annual Step It Up to Cure Pancreatic Cancer 5K Walk last November.

In addition to treating patients with pancreatic cancer, Hezel’s lab has developed a mouse model to investigate the genesis of this particularly deadly type of cancer. The National Cancer Institute reports that rates of new cases have risen 1.2 percent annual during the past 10 years, and death rates have also increased slightly.

PCAWNY’s mission is to increase awareness, raise funds for research, and advocate for patients and families. The organization has donated more than $230,000 to Wilmot and Hezel’s lab in recent years.
