Arthur Moss Receives Honorary Degree from Hungarian University

On November 15th, Cardiology Professor Arthur J. Moss, M.D. received a Doctor Honoris Causa (honorary Ph.D. doctoral degree) from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary. The honorary degree was awarded for Moss’ long list of discoveries in the treatment and prevention of cardiac arrhythmias; sudden cardiac death; heart failure; and Long QT syndrome, a rare inherited disorder that makes the heart particularly susceptible to arrhythmias.

Among Moss’ more than 550 publications are studies from the MADIT (Multicenter Automatic Defibrillator Implantation Trial) series of trials that demonstrated that preventive therapy with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD significantly reduces the risk of death in heart attack survivors. Semmelweis University was a participating center in two of Moss’ MADIT trials and thus they were familiar with his great accomplishments in the field.

Moss has received many scientific awards during his career and he was especially delighted to receive an honorary Ph.D. doctoral degree in addition to his medical (M.D.) degree from Harvard in 1957. While in Hungary to receive the honorary degree, Moss gave a talk on his research and held several research meetings with cardiologists at Semmelweis University.
