Lowell A. Goldsmith, MD, ’02M (MPH)

Lowell A. GoldsmithDr. Lowell A. Goldsmith is dean emeritus of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a professor emeritus of dermatology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Previously, Goldsmith served as the James H. Sterner Professor of Dermatology and chief in the department of dermatology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Goldsmith earned his bachelor of arts in psychology from Columbia College and his medical degree from the State University of New York at Brooklyn. After concluding his medical residencies at UCLA Medical Center, Goldsmith completed fellowships at Harvard Medical School, Brandeis University, and Oxford University in London, England. Goldsmith was a research associate in the National Institute for Child Health and Human development for two years while also member of the United States Public Health Service. He received a master in public health in clinical investigation at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Throughout his career, Goldsmith has served on many committees, advisory boards, and editorial boards. Most notably, he was a member of the Food and Drug Administration Dermatologic Drugs advisory committee and on the board of directors of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at Johns Hopkins University. He was also on the board of directors of the American Dermatology Association, serving as president for one year. Additionally, Goldsmith was involved in multiple National Institutes of Health review groups including the advisory council of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin. Goldsmith received multiple awards for his work including the Martin Carter Mentoring Award from the American Skin Association in 2006, Outstanding Service Award from the Alopecia Areata Foundation in 1997, and Distinguished Service Award from the American Board of Dermatology in 1996. He has co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, books and chapters, and abstracts.
