Jeffrey A. ’87, ’91M (MD) and Carolyn E. Stone ’87
For more than three decades, the University of Rochester has held a special place in the hearts of Dr. Jeffrey Stone and his wife, Carolyn. The couple met in a freshman year Spanish class, graduated with honors, and went on to marry at the Interfaith Chapel. Today they remain closely connected to Rochester as devoted philanthropists and alumni volunteers. Dr. Stone is currently an associate professor of radiology at the Mayo Clinic Florida, where he focuses his practice in the departments of radiology and pain medicine, treating spine disease and performing minimally invasive spine therapies. Dr. Stone is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, an honor bestowed on only ten percent of radiologists. Mrs. Stone’s successful 28-year career includes extensive work as a research analyst for several large utility companies. An expert in competitive intelligence, data analysis and market research, today she provides research services on a freelance project basis for clients across a variety of industries.
Dr. Stone received his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude in cell and developmental biology in 1987 from the University of Rochester and went on to receive his medical degree in 1991. Mrs. Stone received her bachelor’s degree cum laude in statistics in 1987. The Stones were married on the River Campus while he was finishing medical school and she launched her career at Rochester Gas and Electric. As newlyweds, they relocated to Vermont where Dr. Stone completed his internship in general surgery and his one-year residency in pathology at the University of Vermont. He went on to complete his radiology residency at Ohio State University, followed by a fellowship in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The Stones eventually settled in Augusta, Georgia where he helped create a multidisciplinary spine center and developed the neurovascular intervention program at Medical College of Georgia. During their time in Augusta, he was president of the College’s medical staff and served as a trustee while Mrs. Stone offered analytical services on a volunteer basis to non-profits and civic organizations, including the Augusta Museum of History. In 2007, Dr. Stone was recruited by the Mayo Clinic and the couple relocated to her home town of Jacksonville, Florida.
A devoted volunteer, Dr. Stone is a member of the School of Medicine and Dentistry Alumni Council and serves on its communication and advancement committee. Esteemed philanthropists, the Stones are members of the George Eastman Circle, the University’s annual leadership giving society. Motivated by their shared experience at Rochester and grateful for the quality of education they received, the Stones proudly established two endowed funds held in perpetuity, one at the School of Arts and Sciences and one at the School of Medicine, to provide need-based scholarships for undergraduate and medical students. Active in alumni events, the couple participated in the 2015 Volunteer Leadership Retreat at Amelia Island and attended the 2016 Volunteers in Partnership Conference in Rochester.
The Stones live in Jacksonville, where he serves on the board of the Jacksonville Humane Society and both are very involved in animal rescue efforts.
