2010 MD Class of 2010 Commencement Members of the MD Class of 2010 celebrated the completion of medical school and the culmination of a new chapter of their medical careers at commencement exercises held at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, May 14, 2010. Honorary Doctor of Science degrees were given to Linda S. Birnbaum, Ph.D., director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Science and the National Toxicology Program, and Benjamin S. Carson Sr., MD., a professor of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Dr. Carson also gave the commencement address. Remarks from the Class of 2010 were given by Alexander Pearson ’05M (MA), ’09M (PhD), ’10M (MD) and the faculty address was given by Timothy Quill ’76M (MD), ’79M (Res). Emeritus Faculty Dinner School of Medicine Dean Mark B. Taubman, MD hosted the annual Emeritus Faculty Dinner on June 30, 2010 in the Sarah Flaum Atrium of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Leon Miller ’45M (MD) was honored by Dean Taubman for his nearly 70 years of service to the School as a researcher, teacher, and mentor. White Coat Ceremony The incoming MD Class of 2014 commemorated their entry into the medical profession by receiving their white coats during the Dr. Robert and Mrs. Lillian Brent White Coat Ceremony on August 13, 2010. The ceremony took place at the University of Rochester’s Interfaith Chapel. The students in the incoming class also wrote a code of conduct that they recited at the ceremony. Dr. George Engel Memorial Lecture George L. Engel, MD (1913-1999) was a professor of medicine and psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and is credited with developing the School’s biopsychosocial model of patient care, a hallmark of the University of Rochester medical curriculum. An anonymous donor from the Syracuse, NY area, who had been a patient of Dr. Engel, sponsored a lecture in honor of Dr. Engel on September 11, 2010 at the Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles, NY. The keynote speaker for the event was David R. Lambert, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed an internal medicine residency at the New England Deaconess Hospital, a Harvard affiliate, where he received the Elmer Hinon Prize for outstanding physician-patient relationships. Dr. Lambert is also the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education. SMD Alumni and Friends Reception at AAMC The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry hosted an alumni and friends reception during the American Association of Medical College annual meeting in Washington, DC on November 7, 2010. Guests had an opportunity to meet new School of Medicine and Dentistry Dean Mark B. Taubman, MD and Dr. David R. Lambert, Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education.
