HOSTS Program

School of Medicine & Dentistry

The HOSTS (Helping Our Students To Succeed) Program connects  students during their third and fourth years with University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) alumni for mentorship and support as they prepare to take the next step in their medical education and transition to Residency. The primary purpose is to connect students with one of our volunteer alums, either in Rochester, or in the cities they may be interviewing, or perhaps one in their specialty of interest, to serve as a pre-Residency resource and friendly meet-and-greet for when they travel. Our volunteer alums have signed up to offer their knowledge, answers to common questions, best interview practices, and offer support as needed for students as they prepare for and travel to their interviews.

We are currently recruiting URSMD alumni to become volunteer HOSTS to support third and fourth-year students during their residency interviews in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Rochester, and need your help!

Why join HOSTS?

Volunteers are able to give back by providing young students the priceless gift of your time, professional experience, and a warm welcome to your city with local area tips and suggestions, and personal coaching as they journey through the residency interview process.

Our goal is to help create meaningful engagement and volunteer opportunities for our incredible URSMD alumni, while adding value to the student experience and helping to ease the burden and stress fourth-year medical students often experience related to traveling to many residency interviews in multiple cities in a short period of time.

HOSTS alumni volunteers can do any and all of the following for our students:

  • Connect and mentor, share their professional experiences and help make introductions
  • Provide helpful local area information and travel related tips and recommendations as needed
  • Be a local resource for common questions the student may have about the residency experience
  • Host a student for coffee, breakfast, lunch, or dinner
  • Host a welcome reception for residents to their new city

If you know of any URSMD alumni who you think would be great HOSTS, or anyone interested in this exciting opportunity, please let us know! To become a part of HOSTS, or for more information, please contact Jessica Watson, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, at (585) 275-8802 or
